Seoul, Aug 31: South Korea's economic recovery showed mixed signals in July as industrial output remained unchanged from the previous month, while weak consumer spending contrasted with stronger business investment.

According to government data, industrial production was flat in July after rising 2.4 per cent in June. Manufacturing and mining output edged up 0.2 per cent, supported by a sharp 20.7 per cent rise in electronic component production.

Semiconductor output also increased 0.5 per cent, highlighting continued strength in the country's technology and export industries. However, automobile production declined 4.5 per cent, affected by a strike at Hyundai Motor and a high base from the previous month.

Consumer demand remained under pressure. Retail sales fell 2.4 per cent, with durable-goods purchases dropping 7.7 per cent as elevated prices continued to weigh on households. Services output also declined 1.3 per cent, its sharpest monthly fall since February 2022.

Investment provided a brighter spot, with facility investment jumping 7.5 per cent in July. Spending on transportation equipment rose 15.4 per cent, while machinery investment increased 4.2 per cent.

The figures highlight an uneven recovery, with technology production, exports and investment providing support while domestic consumption and services remain weak. The economy's near-term performance is likely to depend on whether strong external demand can offset softer household spending.
