New Delhi, October 8, 2025 : In a major step towards making digital payments more secure and accessible, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is set to roll out biometric-based authentication for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions. This new system will allow users to make payments using fingerprint or facial recognition, eliminating the need to enter a UPI PIN.

No More UPI PINs Needed
Currently, users are required to enter a PIN to authorize any UPI transaction. However, the upcoming update will allow payments to be authenticated using biometric data, such as a thumb impression or facial scan. This change aims to make UPI transactions easier, faster, and more inclusive—especially for individuals who are illiterate or face difficulties remembering PINs.
With biometric authentication:
Government Approval and Rollout
The proposal to integrate biometric data into UPI transactions has been approved by the Central Government, and the NPCI is expected to announce the official launch date soon.
According to NPCI, the biometric feature will:
This system is expected to especially benefit senior citizens, less tech-savvy users, and those in semi-urban and rural areas where digital literacy is still developing.
Biometrics at ATMs via UPI
In addition to regular UPI transactions, ATM withdrawals using UPI will also adopt biometric authentication. Users will be able to withdraw money from ATMs using just their fingerprint or face scan—without needing a card or entering a PIN.
A Leap Toward Inclusive Digital Banking
This initiative represents a major leap forward in India’s digital payments landscape. By making UPI more accessible and secure, biometric authentication could drive greater financial inclusion, especially in rural India where smartphone penetration is high, but digital literacy remains a challenge.
As the NPCI prepares for the rollout, banks and UPI-enabled platforms will begin upgrading their infrastructure to support this next-generation payment method.
Conclusion
The upcoming biometric-based UPI payment system is set to revolutionize how Indians transact digitally. With the face or fingerprint becoming the new password, digital payments will soon be faster, safer, and more inclusive than ever before.
