Tamil Nadu Agriculture Budget 2026-27: Farmers Look for Loan Relief, Better Prices and Climate Support

Chennai, Aug 6: Tamil Nadu’s agriculture sector is set for a major policy announcement on Thursday as Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister R. Vinoth presents the state’s separate Agriculture Budget for 2026-27, with farmers hoping for measures that provide financial relief, improve crop returns and strengthen resilience against climate risks.

The budget is expected to focus on some of the most pressing concerns of the farming community, including a possible crop loan waiver, enhanced procurement support, better price realisation for agricultural produce and initiatives to tackle the impact of unpredictable weather patterns.

The Agriculture Budget comes a day after Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson presented the Revised Budget Estimates for 2026-27, the first budget exercise of the TVK government headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

A possible crop loan waiver remains one of the key expectations from farmers. Several farmer organisations have been demanding relief on cooperative crop loans taken up to February 28, and are looking for clarity on the government’s plan, eligibility criteria and financial provisions.

Improving farm incomes is another major priority. Farmers are expecting announcements on Minimum Support Price (MSP), procurement incentives and measures to ensure better returns for key crops, particularly paddy and sugarcane.

Strengthening procurement infrastructure, improving access to government purchase centres and ensuring timely payments to farmers are among the other issues likely to receive attention. Farmers are also seeking steps to reduce input costs and provide greater support throughout the cultivation cycle.

Climate resilience is expected to be a central theme of the budget, with agriculture facing growing challenges from irregular monsoons, drought conditions, excessive rainfall and changing weather patterns. The government is likely to outline measures focused on irrigation improvement, water conservation, drought preparedness and climate-friendly farming practices, especially in vulnerable agricultural regions such as the Cauvery delta and southern districts.

The budget may also highlight investments in farm mechanisation, storage facilities, agricultural technology, value addition and allied sectors to create new income opportunities for rural communities.

The Revised Budget Estimates for 2026-27 allocated Rs 14,984 crore to the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department, setting the financial backdrop for the sector-specific announcements.

Beyond immediate relief measures, the Agriculture Budget is expected to outline the government’s broader vision for increasing agricultural productivity, strengthening rural livelihoods and promoting sustainable growth in the farming sector.

With the TVK government presenting its first agriculture-focused budget, expectations are high among farmers and stakeholders, who will be watching closely for concrete schemes, financial commitments and long-term solutions to challenges facing Tamil Nadu’s agricultural economy.
