Padikkal’s Adaptability Matters More Than Batting Position, Says Kotak

Galle: India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has praised Devdutt Padikkal for the way he adapted to changing conditions during the first Test against Sri Lanka, saying his ability to adjust to the pitch was more important than the specific batting position he occupied.

Padikkal, returning to Test cricket after a long gap, produced a composed 131 not out off 178 balls, helping India reach 288/2 on a rain-affected opening day in Galle. His innings included 12 fours and a six, and featured confident footwork, effective use of the crease and strong running between the wickets.

Kotak said Padikkal's performance was the result of sustained preparation over the past couple of years. The batter had worked particularly on his back-foot game, step-out shots and sweep strokes, improvements that were evident during his century.

“He has prepared himself for the last couple of years,” Kotak said, giving substantial credit to the Karnataka batter for his development and patience while waiting for another opportunity in the Indian Test side.

The batting coach also played down the significance of the ongoing debate over India's No. 3 position. India have experimented with several players in the crucial slot since the 2023 World Test Championship final, with Padikkal becoming the latest to receive the opportunity.

Kotak said what mattered more was how a batter responded to changing conditions during an innings. After rain interrupted play, the conditions became more favourable for swing bowling, requiring batters to adjust their approach.

“For me, it is very important how they bat at different phases rather than whether they are batting at No. 3, 4 or 5,” Kotak said.

Padikkal's century has consequently strengthened his case for a longer run in India's Test middle order. More importantly, his ability to adapt to different phases of play has given the team management another encouraging option as it continues to shape a young and evolving batting unit.

The first Test is being played at the Galle International Stadium, with India looking to build a strong position in the opening match of the series.
