Hirakud Dam Opens Three More Gates as Mahanadi Flow Rises; Indravati Gates Closed

Bhubaneswar, Sept. 26 (UDN): Authorities at Hirakud Dam have opened three additional gates following a rise in water flow in the Mahanadi river, bringing the total number of open gates to eight.

Of the eight gates currently releasing water, five are located on the left side of the dam and three on the right. The reservoir water level was recorded at 629.56 feet.

Officials said the decision to increase the number of open gates was taken after assessing the reservoir level and the inflow from the upper catchment areas. With additional water being released, authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation downstream of the Mahanadi.

Residents in riverside and low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant and closely follow official updates on river levels and any further instructions issued by the administration.

Meanwhile, all three gates of the Indravati reservoir have been closed. However, one gate of the Muran dam continues to remain open to facilitate the discharge of water.

Authorities are continuing to monitor inflows, reservoir levels and downstream conditions as water movement in the Mahanadi system remains under observation.
