New Delhi, Aug 5: Growing dependence on processed foods, reduced physical activity, and changing lifestyle patterns are contributing to a rise in metabolic health concerns across India, health experts have warned.
Metabolism plays a crucial role in how the body converts food into energy and regulates essential functions such as blood sugar, fat levels, and hormone balance. When these processes are disrupted, they can increase the risk of conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart-related diseases.
Experts said that increased consumption of packaged foods, sugary beverages, and diets high in refined carbohydrates, combined with sedentary routines and longer screen time, are creating new health challenges, particularly in urban populations.
A major concern is the growing prevalence of metabolic syndrome, a combination of risk factors including excess body weight, elevated blood sugar, abnormal cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure. This condition significantly raises the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases if not addressed early.
Health professionals stressed that prevention and lifestyle changes are key to improving metabolic health. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet rich in whole foods, reduced intake of processed foods, adequate sleep, and routine health screenings can help individuals manage risks and maintain better overall health.
Experts also called for greater public awareness and stronger focus on preventive healthcare to address the increasing burden of lifestyle-related diseases.
With metabolic disorders emerging as a major public health challenge, promoting healthier eating habits and active lifestyles will be essential for building a healthier population and reducing the long-term impact of chronic diseases.
