Mumbai, Oct 29: In a significant neurosurgical achievement, doctors at Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Borivali, part of the Apex Group of Hospitals, successfully removed a large pituitary tumour from a 50-year-old male patient who presented with progressively deteriorating vision in both eyes. The tumour was compressing the optic nerves, raising serious concerns about the potential impact on his eyesight.

The patient underwent a detailed clinical evaluation and Magnetic Resonance Imaging, which revealed a large pituitary tumour exerting pressure on the optic nerve pathways responsible for transmitting visual information from the eyes to the brain. Such tumours can cause progressive visual impairment and, if left untreated, may lead to severe or potentially permanent vision loss.
Considering the tumour's location and its effect on the visual pathways, the medical team opted for an advanced endoscopic endonasal surgical approach. Through this minimally invasive technique, the neurosurgeon accessed the tumour through the nasal passage, avoiding the need for a conventional open skull surgery. The procedure enabled the surgical team to achieve complete tumour removal while addressing the compression on the optic nerves.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Samir Parekh, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Borivali , part of the Apex Group of Hospitals. Following the procedure, the patient was closely monitored for recovery and post-operative complications. His recovery progressed satisfactorily, and he was discharged on the fifth day after surgery.
Pituitary tumours develop in the pituitary gland, a small but vital gland located at the base of the brain that regulates several important hormones. Due to their proximity to the optic nerves, these tumours can interfere with vision as they enlarge. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial to prevent further deterioration.
Commenting on the case, Dr. Samir Parekh, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Borivali part of the Apex Group of Hospitals, said,
“When a large pituitary tumour compresses the optic nerves, timely intervention becomes extremely important to prevent further visual deterioration. Endoscopic endonasal surgery allows us to access the tumour through the nose without opening the skull. Our objective was to achieve complete tumour removal and relieve the pressure on the visual pathways while minimising surgical trauma.”
Doctors advise individuals experiencing progressive blurring of vision, loss of peripheral vision, persistent headaches or unexplained visual disturbances to seek timely medical evaluation. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can play a critical role in managing pituitary tumours and preventing serious complications.
